The above is the scene in the episode where Chase is talking to House about his father. Expectations... No I'm not talking about my father in this context, just thought it was an appropriate quote, because I find the above very true.
Well I was reading some things online last night... Reading someone's blog and I don't know if the latest post was in any way related to me... But I don't expect anything. That's why I suddenly remembered this episode of House and realised that yes, it hurts much less when you have no expectations. Especially when these expectations mean a lot to you.
Like when I didn't expect Liverpool to beat Benfica in the Champions League quarter finals this season and I wasn't disappointed because they did not win in the end. Like when I did not expect the concert to be a huge success and I wasn't disappointed.
Even little things like expecting your friend to reply your smses or emails, or expecting your friends to help you or make small sacrifices for you... Maybe you may be asking too much, but if you don't expect anything, you're rarely disappointed.
It makes you numb, it makes you cold, in a sense. It alienates you from everyone else. But like I said before, the more detached you are from everything the less it hurts when your potential expectations are not fulfilled.
I used to expect a lot from everyone, you know... "Great Expectations"... Until I was disappointed over and over again. Despite all this, I still maintain the hope that someone out there will prove me wrong... But I don't expect that.
